Shared language, diverging genetic histories: high-resolution analysis of Y-chromosome variability in Calabrian and Sicilian Arbereshe.
2015
The relationship between genetic and linguistic diversification in human populations has been often explored to interpret some specific issues in human history. The Albanian-speaking minorities of Sicily and Southern Italy (Arbereshe) constitute an important portion of the ethnolinguistic variability of Italy. Their linguistic isolation from neighboring Italian populations and their documented migration history, make such minorities particularly effective for investigating the interplay between cultural, geographic and historical factors. Nevertheless, the extent of Arbereshe genetic relationships with the Balkan homeland and the Italian recipient populations has been only partially investi…
A glimpse into the socialization of bilingual youngsters as interpreters: the case of Latino bilinguals brokering communication for their families an…
2010
Work on bilinguals who act as family interpreters, while not focused particularly on the development of translation and interpreting abilities, contributes to our understanding of life experiences of the individuals who begin to interpret early in their lives (Valdés and Angelelli 2003). With some exceptions (Harris 1977, 1978, 1980, 1992; Toury 1984, 1995) very little has been written about the lived experiences of young interpreters and/or about their socialization as family interpreters. Since most of the community interpreters of today were interpreters in their late childhood and adolescence, getting a glimpse into their lives and experiences may help researchers (and teachers of inter…
Tracce dell’arcaico locativo nell’opera di Luca Matranga
2021
Strategies for conservation of a minority language. Between convergence and hybridization
2019
The Arbëresh linguistic varieties constitute a rich field of investigation for interesting phenomena of language attrition and contact. Because of the ancient and prolonged situation of bilingualism between Albanian and Italo-Romance varieties an interesting set of phenomena of code-switching, loan, convergence and hybridization has presented itself. This research concerns the Arbëresh linguistic minority of Greci, a small town in the Campanian region of southern Italy. Within Arbëria, the widespread archipelago of Albanian-speaking communities which occupies a vast territory in southern Italy, the preservation of Arbëresh presents very different sociolinguistic situations. Inside Arbëria G…
Per un approccio settoriale allo studio del mutamento lessicale nelle varietà italoalbanesi. Il campo semantico degli animali
2021
We have already had the opportunity to demonstrate to what extent the distinction between “common” and “specialised” lexicon is a crucial key to the evaluation of processes of lexical substitution within Sicilian-Albanian contexts. Unlike to what happens to the dynamics of contact among the varieties of Italo-Romance repertoires (where dialectal variants seem to be better preserved in some experiential fields that are typical of traditional activities), in the Sicilian-Albanian context, the original (Albanian) lexicon seems to be more preserved within the setting of specific experiencial fields of a greater community sharing (and, substantially, in the urban context). Instead, the concepts …
Considerazioni su alcune dinamiche sociolinguistiche in contesto siculoalbanese
2015
This study investigates diverse sociolinguistic dynamics relating to Sicilian Albanian communities. In light of a survey of the socio-demographic and socio-economic aspects characterising the communities under scrutiny, it has emerged that these communities have a twofold configuration: on the one hand, the community of Piana degli Albanesi presents features of mobility and typically “urban” details, on the other hand, the communities of S. Cristina and Contessa Entellina can be distinguished by an apparent state of isolation and typically “rural” traits. By contrast to what mainstream tendencies may encourage thinking about, the urban socio-economic structured community is sociolinguistica…
Relational Ethnic Tourism in Sicily. Linguistic minorities and rural development.
2010
Mass tourism has contributed to the spread of English throughout the world, and to portrait local traditions and languages as archaic and folkloristic cultural traits, not a part of real life. Under globalization and the thrust to linguistic homogeneity, local minority language communities are going to weaken their cultural heritage, when conforming to English speaking mass tourists expectations. This is not, however, necessary nor unavoidable. Evidence of the contrary exists: in some cases tourism plays a fundamental role to preserve minority languages (Greathouse-Amador 2005). In the past, languages were not considered as attractors in tourist markets; they showed their potentialities to …

The Importance of Multilingual Information and Plain English in Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
Health is a common issue for all human beings. As a consequence, everyone in the world has in some way to cope with the language of medicine. This is true now more than ever due to the global health crisis caused by the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has introduced a great amount of terms, previously mostly used by epidemiologists and statisticians, but which now have entered the daily lexicon of many languages. As the medium of international scientific communication, English is the language of worldwide information about the pandemic, and the main source of terms and expressions for other languages. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on English lexicon has been so deep that the Oxford E…
Migrazione e variazione diatopica, mobilità e cambio linguistico. Premesse allo studio delle varietà italoalbanesi
2022
For the Italo-Albanian reality, the diatopic-diachronic relationship of dialect variation takes on different aspects compared to that experienced in the Italo-Romance reality. This is due to the fact that the linguistic-geographical dislocation (prior and subsequent to the diaspora) and the diachronic distribution of the various migratory stages, have produced historical and territorial discontinuity of the archipelagos and of the Arbëreshë islands variously distributed in the Italo-Romance continuum. In addition to this differential factor between the order of dialectological studies of the Italo-Romance sphere and those relating to the Italo-Albanian reality, other problematic relationshi…
